Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are set to face off in a friendly on Monday. The game is one of the last matches on their contracts, and they will both be out of contract at the end of next season.
Glamour football is a term used to describe matches between high-profile clubs, most often those from Europe’s biggest leagues. In Qatar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will come face to face in Doha on Monday as Portugal takes on Argentina in a glamour friendly.
The game has been organized by Qatar Tourism Authority with the aim of promoting sport within the country, which was recently awarded hosting rights for the 2022 World Cup football tournament. The two sides will be playing without their respective managers though – Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone and Barcelona boss Luis Enrique were both unavailable due to injuries sustained at the domestic level (Atlético Madrid) or international duty (Barcelona). As well as helping promote Qatari tourism through its capital city's infrastructure improvements around Al Rayyan Stadium where it will take place over 50 days before Christmas Day 2021 comes around again!
Messi has made a flying start to the new season with Barcelona, scoring 15 goals in 14 games in all competitions. This is his best goal tally since he scored 19 in 2016-17 and it’s an early indication that he could be on course for another La Liga title.
Messi has scored 15 goals in all competitions so far this season, including four against Real Betis on Sunday as Ernesto Valverde's side bounced back from their Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid with a victory over Sevilla at Camp Nou (1-0). It was also his first goal against Valencia since 2014 when he was playing for Argentina."
But Messi's form has been unable to prevent the Catalans from struggling domestically, with Ronald Koeman's side six points behind leaders Real Sociedad after just 10 games.
Ronald Koeman is in his second season as Barcelona's boss and he has won two of his five games in charge so far at Camp Nou.
The game is set to be one of the last matches of Messi's contract with Barcelona, which is set to expire next summer.
Messi has flirted with the idea of leaving Barca in recent seasons but has never formally tried to force a move. He has always maintained that he wants to remain at Camp Nou until his playing career ends and insisted he will not seek an exit before then.
Messi has not left Barcelona in recent years, but he has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the club.
Messi's last contract extension at Barca was signed in June 2017 and lasts until 2021. The deal included an option for another year on top of that extension after 2021 if the player decided he wanted to extend his stay further. It is believed that if Messi decides he wants out of Spain again then there will be no shortage of suitors willing to pay him whatever it takes when he becomes available again in 2021 or 2022 - assuming they can get over their initial shock at losing him again!
Amid speculation over his future, he did not report for pre-season testing with Barca and was forced to train alone before his eventual U-turn.
Messi’s absence in Qatar comes after he was left out of Argentina’s World Cup qualifying squad by coach Jorge Sampaoli due to a lack of match fitness and form. The 31-year-old has been linked with Real Madrid as well as Manchester United this summer but neither club have yet made any move for one of world football's best players despite rumors linking them with various players at Camp Nou.
The forward worked on his fitness during the off-season before joining up with Ernesto Valverde's side ahead of their tour which begins tomorrow against Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena (kick-off 7pm CET). But there are no plans for him to play any part in tomorrow night's game - just like there won't be any contact between them until after Euro 2020 starts next June 1st, 2021 when they face Italy at Stadio San Nicola di Bari near Naples where they'll play England three days later
Ronaldo is also out of contract at Juventus next summer but there appears little prospect of him leaving Turin any time soon.
The 31-year-old has been in Italy since 2003 when he joined Inter from Sporting Lisbon. He moved to Manchester United from the Portuguese club in 2009 and won two Premier League titles before leaving for Real Madrid last year.
Ronaldo's family is currently based in Spain with their five children, but he said on Tuesday that they would move back to Portugal if he wins the FIFA Ballon d'Or for a third time later this month. The forward also claims father Jorge is happy living on his own again after spending many years living with his wife Dolores Aveiro until she died from cancer last year (see below).
Messi and Ronaldo are football legends who are both out of contract next year. They are both considered to be among the best players in history, but they also have a lot of money on the line when it comes to their next contracts.
Ronaldo has won many trophies while playing for Real Madrid and Portugal, including three Champions League titles (2008-09; 2013-14; 2017). He’s also appeared in four UEFA Euro finals (2008; 2012; 2016; 2018).
Messi has become one of the most successful soccer players ever by winning four Ballon d'Or awards—the award given annually to the best player in Europe or worldwide—in addition to leading Argentina into the World Cup semifinals twice since 2010 (2014) and helping Barcelona win La Liga five times since 2014 with some help from Lionel Messi himself!
